Have you ever?

Have you ever spent time allowing your mind to wander and wonder?

Have you ever thought about how incredible it is that you can read and decipher these words and draw meaning from them? Have you ever contemplated in amazement how your body works, maintaining itself to a large degree without any help from you?

Have you taken time to contemplate what causes your heart to beat and what turned the breakfast you had this morning into skin, fingernails, and hair?

Have you ever taken just a few moments to simply stare at a beautiful flower and notice the incredible patterns and colors that not even the greatest artist could re-create?

Have you ever looked up at the stars and planets at night and been in awe of the expansiveness of it all, perhaps even wondering if there might be some other being on some distant planet looking back at ours at the same time, wondering the same thing?

Have you ever thought about what holds the planets and stars in place?

Have you ever gazed into a newborn baby’s eyes and seen the infinite presence of pure spirit looking back at you and been in awe of the fact that this being just came from the absolute essence, God?

How can you or I do any of these things and not feel like an intricate and significant part of something far greater and grander than the “little me”?

I have done all these things, and I can tell you that, in part, it is what keeps me sane, grounded, and spiritually connected to God, life, and purpose when the world seems to be getting more and more crazy each day.

This also includes those times when I tend to get too enmeshed in my own personal trauma dramas. Life is always manifesting purpose; all we need to do is think about the miracle of it all.

So, the next time you feel as if you are getting caught up in the frenzy of the world or your personal life begins to look like a bad soap opera, take some time and consider some of the above questions.

Give yourself the gift of a sacred moment in the now. With great and clear intention, contemplate and connect with the miracle of life, where God is always present.

Celebrate your unity with God…and truly be in awe. The word “awe” is the root from which the word “awesome” comes…and that is what you really are. Not because I say so but because God is awesome, and what God is, so too, are you.

It’s just a matter of taking time to think about the wonder of it all.

SO, WHAT DID I LEARN?

I learned that sometimes it is easier to share my soul with the whole world
Than it is to share it with someone intimate

I learned that aspiring toward my desires takes true commitment
And, a solid belief that my goals have legitimacy

I learned that asking for understanding is sometimes impossible
But, giving understanding is not

I learned that trying to prepare others for what lies ahead,
May confuse their innocence and thwart their progress

I learned that saying no to someone else, even when they object
Can help them learn to say no in their own lives, when need be

I learned that wanting and needing are hard to separate
But the difference is of great importance

I learned that I am stronger than I thought I was
And, that I need both strength and insight to function

I learned that I will not always feel positive
But that, my down days give me perspective

I learned that patience takes self-discipline
But, its rewards are immense

I learned that laughing after making a mistake
Does not erase its valuable lesson

I learned that letting someone else’s laughter reach my heart
Is just as rewarding as saying something to make them laugh

I learned that appreciation of others, of life and of challenges
Causes each day to be full and fruitful

I learned that it is good to expect better of one’s self
But, not so good to stress over petty details

I learned that living is not one huge moment of joy
It is the travel, and the unravel – the discovery of life,
That builds foundations for joy and for loving and living

If Not Now, When?

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we’re frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be happier and more liberated when they are. After that, we’re frustrated that we are dealing with pesky teenagers. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, or go on a fancy vacation, or when we retire.

The truth is there’s no better time to be happy than right now.

If not now, when?  Your life will always be filled with challenges and worries. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.

Stop waiting….
–until your car or home is paid off
–until you get a new car or home
–until your kids leave the house
–until you go back to school
–until you finish school
–until you lose 10 lbs.
–until you gain 10 lbs.
–until you get married
–until you get a divorce
–until you have kids
–until someone makes up his or her mind
–until next year
–until you die

Can you think of a better time than right now to be happy?

So…

Work like you don’t need money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. And dance like no one’s watching.

Today is a gift that’s why it’s called the PRESENT!

Shake it off and take a step up

One day a farmer’s donkey fell into an abandoned well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn’t worth it to him to try to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. Realising what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly. Then, a few shovelfuls later, he quieted down completely.

The farmer peered down into the well, and was astounded by what he saw. With every shovelful of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing some thing amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.

Pretty soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of all the neighbours. Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to not let it bury you, but to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone.

We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

++++++++++++++++++

The moral to the story is very simple.  Life is going to shovel dirt at you.  You have two choices:

You can be buried alive by the dirt life throws at you

or

You can shake it off and step up

+++++++++++++++++++

What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him… All because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

If we face our problems and respond to them positively and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity… the adversities that come along in life usually have within them the potential to benefit and bless us!
